He does not seem to be afraid (after all, this is all happening in the girls' bathroom), but his brain can't quite dispel the idea that it might be true. It reminded me that a few years ago, a young friend of Emmanuel's who lives in another part of Paris told him about a dame blanche who presumably stands on road corners and leads drivers off the road Because it was only one kid saying it instead of a whole school gossiping about it, the tale did not get much traction with him. It is quite interesting that these stories keep emerging, carried underground by generations of kids and resurfacing from time to time. A quick Internet search shows that this white lady pops up in many countries, complete with her own Wikipedia entry and Dailymotion videos (a French YouTube lok-alike). I guess kids and adults do love to scare themselves or rather to embody their fears into something concrete . When I was in primary school in my hometown of Châtellerault, we walked to school and we had a choice of a chemin long and a chemin court , a long and a short way. The short way was cursed with a sort of haunted house, a little manor sitting back on a large lawn hidden behind tall walls and a usually closed door. We were convinced that there lived a monster of some sort, an oger I am pretty sure we called it. So nothing new here. What is new, and this is a bit of different story or maybe not, is that I started walking to school alone probably around the age of 7 or 8 (Dad, correct me if you are reading this and I am wrong). Emmanuel is about to turn 10 and he is still not walking to school by himself even though the walk is shorter and straighter. The boys walk part of the way alone every morning now and Emm comes back by himself one afternoon a week when his brother has an activity at school. So what are we parents afraid of? The urban bogeyman, the meany who is going to grab our children, the pervert and the sick, our own kids playing hokey. Come on, it is a very short walk with other kids and parents every step of the way! ]]> Conférences de presse vertes kelloucq Cette semaine, j'avais deux invitations à assister à un webcast en remplacement d'une conférence de presse plus classique où on se rend tous dans un hôtel ou autre lieu tendance pour déguster des petites choses en attendant les retardataires avant de s'asseoir pour écouter le topo. Pour le premier webcast, dont je « sors » à l'instant même, il s'agissait pour HP de présenter sa politique verte justement. Ne pas choisir la méthode du webacast aurait été une occasion ratée de faire comprendre que nous devons tous changer nos comportements pour sauver la planète. Techniquement, après un petit ratage au démarrage pour cause de mot de passe erroné, c'était tout à fait confortable de regarder les intervenants à l'écran et de taper ses questions au clavier. Alors, bilan ? J'ai eu l'information en une heure au lieu de deux au minimum quand il faut se déplacer. Je n'ai pas pollué en me déplaçant en voiture (impossible de toute façon) ou en transport en commun. Par contre, je n'ai pas fait d'exercice en y allant à pied ou en vélo. Plus difficile d'évaluer l'impact énergétique des moyens techniques mis en uvre (hébergement, transmission des données, nos PC allumés pour recevoir le webcast, ). Du côté négatif, les conférences sont souvent l'occasion de voir des collègues ce qui n'est pas négligeable quand on travaille chez soi ou même de faire de nouvelles rencontres qui peuvent déboucher sur des projets. Sans parler d'idées de sujets qu'on glane souvent avant et après la conférence en discutant. Cet aspect est gommé dans le webcast, encore qu'un collègue qui était aussi dans « l'assistance » vient de m'envoyer un email avec des infos liées à une question que j'avais posée. Autre difficulté, restez concentrée car il est très facile de lire ses emails et de faire toute autre chose. Finalement, beaucoup de bon et un peu de moins bon. On ne pourra pas tout faire via Internet. Pour le premier webcast, dont je « sors » à l’instant même, il s’agissait pour HP de présenter sa politique verte justement. Ne pas choisir la méthode du webacast aurait été une occasion ratée de faire comprendre que nous devons tous changer nos comportements pour sauver la planète. Techniquement, après un petit ratage au démarrage pour cause de mot de passe erroné, c’était tout à fait confortable de regarder les intervenants à l’écran et de taper ses questions au clavier.
 
Alors, bilan ? J’ai eu l’information en une heure au lieu de deux au minimum quand il faut se déplacer. Je n’ai pas pollué en me déplaçant en voiture (impossible de toute façon) ou en transport en commun. Par contre, je n’ai pas fait d’exercice en y allant à pied ou en vélo. Plus difficile d’évaluer l’impact énergétique des moyens techniques mis en œuvre (hébergement, transmission des données, nos PC allumés pour recevoir le webcast,…). 

Du côté négatif, les conférences sont souvent l’occasion de voir des collègues ce qui n’est pas négligeable quand on travaille chez soi ou même de faire de nouvelles rencontres qui peuvent déboucher sur des projets. Sans parler d’idées de sujets qu’on glane souvent avant et après la conférence en discutant. Cet aspect est gommé dans le webcast, encore qu’un collègue qui était aussi dans « l’assistance » vient de m’envoyer un email avec des infos liées à une question que j’avais posée. Autre difficulté, restez concentrée car il est très facile de lire ses emails et de faire toute autre chose. 

Finalement, beaucoup de bon et un peu de moins bon. On ne pourra pas tout faire via Internet. Mais un webcast de temps en temps, c’est reposant et ça donne bonne conscience.

A few minutes after riding in front of the former Bibliothèque nationale, I am crossing avenue de l'Opéra. A quick look to the right to check out the opera building and a few minutes later I am taking a left on rue de la Paix (a pricey one on the French monopoly board) and coming out on Place Vendôme. No time to check out the jewellery stores. The next step is to turn right on rue de Rivoli which borders the Tuileries Gardens, then to take my chances on Place de la Concorde (a funny name given that it is the place where the French used to guillotine away during the Revolution) and now a crazy busy traffic mess. To avoid getting on the busy Champs Elysées quite yet, I take a few parallel streets (avenue Gabriel and rue de Ponthieu) before getting on avenue Franklin Roosevelt to finally get on Champs Elysées. 15 minutes later after leaving my place, I am at my meeting, full of energy after this nice ride through Paris. Going home, I ride "down" the Champs Elysées pretending I am wearing the maillot jaune in the final stage of the Tour de France. ]]> Famille équitable kelloucq Lecture intéressante dans le New York Times Magazine ce week-end avec cet article sur le partage égal des tâches dans le couple, surtout dans l'éducation des enfants. L'article étiquette ce phénomène « equally shared parenting ou shared care . Nous n'avions pas de grands principes sur le sujet en nous lançant dans la vie de famille. Mais franchement, j'ai le sentiment qu'EJ et moi avons toujours réussi à respecter ce partage équitable. EJ a pris plusieurs mois pour s'occuper d'Emmanuel à plein temps quand il était bébé. Pour Gabriel, c'est moi qui m'en suis chargée. Nous sommes aussi susceptibles l'un que l'autre de les aider avec leurs devoirs, de les emmener chez le médecin, d'imposer la discipline ou de lancer une lessive. A la cuisine, je ne vous raconte même pas. Evidemment, EJ est tout le contraire de ces hommes qui sont fiers d'annoncer qu'ils savent à peine faire cuire un uf. Je ne pense pas souffrir de ce complexe des mères qui accusent les pères d'incompétence dès qu'ils lèvent le petit doigt même si on ne partage pas toujours la même façon de faire. Il ne me semble pas difficile de tout partager. EJ got treated to an American breakfast in Paris complete with eggs, bacon, hash browns and a fruit salad which Emmanuel and I put together while Gabriel and EJ slept in. It was nice to work with Emmanuel who is very handy around the kitchen and who was doing his homework in between grating potatoes and squeezing fresh orange juice. Il est plus menacé que jamais par le réaménagement des Halles et il semblerait même que son arrête de mort est déjà signé. Les parents et activistes du quartier ne baissent pas les bras. Hier, il y avait une manif autour du jardin, une chaîne humaine d'enfants et d'adulte scandant "Cassez pas le jardin". Les garçons y étaient avec beaucoup de leurs copains d'école. Pour une fois qu'on les encourage à crier aussi fort qu'ils peuvent. C'est des coups à leur faire prendre goût pour les manifestations. Prochaine étape, une réunion avec notre maire, Bertrand Delanoe, programée pour le 10 juillet. Voici le site du Comité de soutien au jardin. Je pense qu'on y criera moins fort. Encore que... Une maman de l'école vient de nous envoyer un email qui dit, en gros, que ce parc devrait être fermé car trop dangereux et qu'il faut travailler sur d'autres idées de jardins pour enfants dans le projet des Halles. J'ai envie de lui dire que 1) il n'y a aucun garantie que quelque chose d'approchant soit réalisé dans le nouveau projet et 2) que ce jardin est un véritable plaisir pour les enfants et que la vie est dangereuse. ]]> Video overdose kelloucq Last week, I talked about CCTV, the video systems that the British seem happy to live with if it helps reduce crime. I am getting tired of getting filmed wherever I go. I am not necessarily talking about these cameras doing surveillance on parking lots or in public places. I am also talking about the tendency of people totting video cameras everywhere. In the street while you listen to musicians playing Georgia on my mind or at the school show. Recently, I have been to several professionals events where as journalists watching demos or talking to company spokespeople we were being both photographed and filmed. At a recent event (the one in England as a matter of fact), there was a sign on the door encouraging anybody who did not want to be filmed to get in touch with someone. That was an exception. Usually there are many cameras filming in all directions and it would be difficult to make sure you appear in none of the shots. So what is the solution? Hiding in my home office? Going to those events with a bag on my head? Always being aware of the cameras and turning my back on them? Accepting that I will show up in somebody's footage sometime? Making a scene about it? I am not quite fed up enough yet, but the trend is definitely bothering me. Clearly, I don't quite belong to the YouTube generation. See, I am even an old-fashioned blogger and not a trendy vblogger. I am what my friend Dominique Piotet in his book L'Alchimie des multitudes calls a digital immigrant (as opposed to a native). But hey, I am happy to be an immigrant. Hopefully it means that there are certain things I don't take for granted the way a native does. Like being filmed everywhere I go and finding it normal. Ooops, got to go. I am not necessarily talking about these cameras doing surveillance on parking lots or in public places. I am also talking about the tendency of people totting video cameras everywhere. ]]> Immeuble en travaux kelloucq Remarquez nos beaux échafaudages. Une société est en train de refaire notre toit depuis presqu'un an maintenant. La fin des travaux est sans cesse annoncée et reculée. Pendant l'assemblée générale en février, l'architecte de l'immeuble avait prédit que ce serait terminé fin avril. Je l'ai croisé début mai. Il m'a affirmé qu'il n'avait jamais dit ça, mais que la société serait partie fin mai. Hum Début juin, j'ai posé la question en directe aux ouvriers. Mais je dois dire que je croirai à leur départ le jour où l'échafaudage sera enfin démonté. Bonne nouvelle hier, ils ont nettoyé la cour de tout le bazar qu'ils y entreposaient depuis des mois. Devons-nous intépréter cela comme un signe d'espoir?
