Là, impossible d’ignorer l’actualité française même du fin fond de la Californie où il est assez facile de ne pas être obnubilé par ce qui se passe en France. Les grèves dans les transports ne nous touchent habituellement dans notre 2^e arrondissement puisque que nous n’avons pas obligatoirement à nous déplacer. Par contre, l’inconnu est toujours l’école. Un mot dans le cahier des enfants demandait aux parents d’accompagner les enfants jusqu’à la porte pour s’assurer que l’enseignant n’avait pas été empêché de venir par la grève. Que se serait-il passé dans le cas contraire ? Enfant refusé ou mis de côté dans une sorte de garderie ?

 

Et ce président qui divorce comme ça après quelques mois aux manettes ? Vu d’ici, c’est assez inconcevable car on élit un président, une First Lady et des First Children. C’est un peu un « package ». Sur la radio NPR ce matin, leur correspondante à Paris évoquait la peur que le président ne soit déstabilisé par la fin de son mariage. Grèvistes dans les rues et divorce à la maison, ça fait beaucoup pour un seul homme.

 

 

It has become impossible to ignore French news even from California where it is so easy to feel disconnected from what is happening in France. Strikes in public transportation don’t usually affect us because our lifestyle in the center of Paris does not involve a regular commute. The big unknown is usually the school and whether the teachers will be able to make it. A note in the children’s notebook a couple days before the strike warned parents to accompany the students all the way to the door to see if the teacher had indeed made it (some parents drop their children within sight of the school at the end of the street or older grades might even walk to school by themselves. We walk to school, no car drop off for us in Paris). What would they have done if the teacher was not there? Refused kids or brought them in and taken care of them in a daycare sort of way?

 

And then this brand new president getting divorced quietly or so he hoped? From the US where the first family comes as a bundled deal, this seems so impossible and somehow so French, though it has to be a first in France (I did not check my facts, but I would be willing to bet). NPR's Eleanor Beardsley this morning was voicing the fear that the president, who has always said that his wife was a close collaborator, could be very shaken up by this state of affair. Strikers in the streets and divorce at home, nothing is going well for Sarkozy.
