La cantine/French school lunch
Deux grandes différences à la cantine entre cette année à Paris et l’année dernière en Californie : nous, les parents n’avons pas à travailler en cuisine et les enfants mangent un repas chaud avec quatre composantes qui varient tous les jours. Par exemple, demain au menu :
Cuisse de poulet rôtie (volaille certifiée française)
Blettes et pomme de terre à la béchamel
Brie
Crêpe au sucre (pour fêter la Chandeleur)
Pain biologique
Nous avons particulièrement de la chance car notre maire d’arrondissement étiqueté Verts a introduit dans tous les repas soit des ingrédients bio, soit des produits AOC ou autres produits de qualité. Je dois dire que cela me plait plus que le menu de l’année dernière du type pizza tous les lundis, poulet pâné et pommes de terre tous les mardis, etc….Et pourtant Glorietta était mieux loti que la plupart des écoles américaines.
There are two big differences at the school cafeteria between Paris this year and California last year. We parents don’t have to volunteer in the kitchen and the children have a 4-course hot meal that is different every day. For example, here is tomorrow’s menu:
Roasted chicken leg (the chicken is certified domestically raised)
Swiss chard and potatoes in a bechamel sauce
Brie cheese
Crepe with sugar (this is in celebration of la Chandeleur)
Organic bread
We are particularly lucky because our arrondissement mayor is from the Green Party and has introduced meals which systematically contain either organic ingredients or ingredients with labels like AOC (controlled origin). I have to say I like the French school lunch a bit better than last year’s system with its repetitive pizza every Monday, chicken nugget and potatoes every Tuesday (I might have the days wrong, but you get the idea) and its saving grace, the fresh salad bar. I know that Lori and her incredible crew of parents provide something that’s much better than the average American school lunch. But the French are ahead on that one.
