Making sure children enjoy museums

This past week showed us that many museums are making a big effort to attract children. Any parent trying to visit a museum in peace can only appreciate those efforts. Besides workshops (Emmanuel attended several at the Louvre when he was younger), many offer audio guides especially designed for children. The Marie-Antoinette exhibit had one and the boys both enjoyed it very much. Gabriel kept going from room to room listening intently and then sharing the info with us. He was less interested in the guide at Chantilly, but still managed to enjoy his own activities like drawing the painting the “Massacre des Innocents” under Stephanie’s guidance. Heading out to the Chantilly gardens, we picked up a couple of booklets with questions adapted to each age. The 5-7 year-old crowd, for example, was encouraged to touch the statues to find out what they are made of. And of course, there was our adventure in the Marais. These guides and booklets are great because they keep the children from getting bored. But more than that, they also get them to take an interest and to learn about what they are seeing. Thumbs up.
