Meeting Evan

LA was definitely worth the trip, forget about our carbon imprint. The highlight of the week-end was meeting Evan in the flesh. No more Skype chats, we finally got to play with the little cutie, feed him his lunch and watch him do his 10-month old stuff. It is a new and wonderful feeling to be Aunt Isabelle. Watching the boys take care of their cousin and playing with him with big smiles on their faces was also wonderful. He is just adorable and soaks in all the attention in a good-natured, happy way. The great news is that we get to see him again very, very soon with Labor Day coming. We can get a new Evan fix quick. (The photo shows Evan with his court upon meeting the boys who were sleeping out in the garden in a tent, I will need to ask his parents for permission to show his cute face here).

The family reunion on the beach down in Hermosa Beach was also worth it. Aunts, uncle, cousins and assorted kids on the beach all day with pizza and birthday cake for little Nicholas. It was a full day of jumping in the waves for hours, taking in the warm sun with the cooling ocean breeze, chatting and catching up, bantering with all those easy-going members of the extended family. And all that without getting stuck in the LA freeway traffic back and forth. We were on a roll.

We were back to Orinda at a reasonable time last night to get the boys back to school in good shape this morning (I know teachers are reading this blog, I have to be careful…). To me, there is something very American about driving over 700 miles for a 2-day week-end. My feeling is that most French families would find the concept a bit crazy, a bit too much. But heck, these two days were intense and fun and well worth it.
