Nous avons été très contents d’apprendre qu’Emmanuel était admis en section internationale au lycée Honoré de Balzac. Nous pensons que c’est la meilleure façon pour lui de tirer partie de sa double culture et de son bilinguisme à Paris en continuant à les enrichir. Il devrait être heureux dans cette ambiance plus internationale au contact d’autres enfants français biculturels, mais aussi d’élèves qui arrivent de l’étranger. Par exemple, Balzac a un yearbook (le livre de l’année qui résume en textes et en photos les évènements marquants de l’année scolaire), un prom (un « bal » de fin d’année),…
Parce que je suis un peu fainéante et parce que le sujet s’y prête finalement, je vous livre un message envoyé à la famille aux Etats-Unis.
"Wanted to share some good news with all of you. Well, the fact that Emmanuel is going to high school is not exactly a scoop. But yesterday we were very happy to learn that he was admitted to a special high school with an international program in 6 languages, including English. The kids are a mixture of international students and French ones who are typically bicultural and bilingual already. And not only in English, but also in Spanish, German, Arabic, Portuguese and Italian. He should be like a fish in water.
For the next three years, he will be taking 6 extra hours a week of English literature and history, leading up to a special high school degree (a "bac option internationale"). The program is under the supervision of Cambridge, so more British than American. All the teachers are natives, mostly Brits. But I think there is one American too. Don't hold it against Emmanuel if he starts speaking with a British accent :)
That's in addition to the regular high school diet of French, philosophy, maths, physics, chemistry, history, etc...In one year, he will choose a track for the last two years of high school (scientific, literary or economics). And in 3 years, we will be sending you a message about where he is headed for college!
For now, he is recovering from two days of exams which concluded his middle school career. That's the French for you : exams, but no graduation ceremony and no parties! Hope he enjoyed the hoopla last year at Ecole Bilingue.
