Demo/Demo
Un mot rapide de San Diego. Je suis "descendue dans le Sud" dimanche avec une étape très sympa à Los Angeles chez Craig et Tracy. C'est très agréable d'avoir une conversation qui ne soit pas interrompue par deux garçons en train de grimper sur la tête de leur oncle! Puis direction San Diego où je suis hébergé chez Dick et Kathy dans leur belle maison fleurie.
C'est maintenant ma deuxième journée à Démo, une conférence incontournable pour lancer de nouvelles sociétés (69 sociétés dont une française qui paient environ 20 000 dollars pour venir présenter devant un parterre de gens "influents"). Voici mon premier papier en ligne en anglais. Même si Skype, TiVo et le Palm Pilot ont été lancés ici, il semble que cette année ne tienne pas les mêmes promesses. On semble dans une année de "raffinement" des idées plutôt que de véritables innovations. Parmi les membres de la presse, il y a quelques dinosaures qui me rappellent la sombre époque où je faisais des relations publiques. Je suis passée de l'autre côté de la barrière et, à tout prendre, je préfère cette nouvelle position. Il faut que je retourne au turbin à écouter des entrepreneurs enthousiastes raconter et démontrer leur idée en espérant qu'elle sera "the next big thing"...
A quick word from San Diego. I started driving south on Sunday and had a very nice stop in Los Angeles at Craig and Tracy’s. It is nice to have a full conversation with them without having one nephew or another crawling all over Craig. Emmanuel and Gabriel love the guy, but seem to confuse him with a punching ball. It was fun to Skype the boys on Monday morning though and see their bouncy little faces on the computer screen.
On to San Diego where I am staying with Dick and Kathy in their wonderful house and got to hang out with Kathy and Brandon. It is the second and last day of the Demo conference which is the official reason why I am down here. Even though Demo has been THE conference for high-tech companies to announce new products for 16 years, this year’s crop seems to be a bit disappointing (famous last word if one of the presenters ends up becoming the next Google or Facebook). As one industry guy was telling me last night, we are in a time of refinement, not innovation. Some companies are certainly interesting, others seem to fall flat. Here is the first story I filed about it last night, it is here as long as it does not move off the front page. It is a crack up to hang out with some of the old media dinosaurs whom I remember from the dark ages when I used to work in public relations. All in all, I am happy to be on the other side of that particular fence now. Back to the grind listening to enthusiastic entrepreneurs make their 6-minute spiel on stage and try to convince us that they are the next big thing…
