Les Kelloucq en voyage

Gab is 8

One day, the boys will be in their 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s (beyond that, I will probably be losing my marbles). EJ and I will look back and try to remember what it was like when they were little, like when Gabriel turned 8. Remember, we had just returned to California for our second stint as a family and he was in 3rd grade with Mrs. C. He got up early and just him and I had some time to cuddle on the sofa and I told him about the day he was born and how we had not decided yet if he was going to be Gabriel or Martin, a story he knows by heart though it is always fun telling it again. Remember, we made those fruit skewers to get to his class; we had a small skewer-making production line going to get them done quickly because we were both running off to a job and they had to be dropped at school before 10 a.m.

Remember how that night we were busy, your parents had lined up this great opportunity for you to cook a French dinner for 40 and it was a chance to show your stuff and I was invited along (just) because I am your French wife. Remember how Mari and George did not miss a beat when we asked them to take care of the boys on Gabriel’s birthday. And even though I was a bit sad not to be with him on his actual birthday, I was happy that he was going to have fun with Mari and George and it was going to be just fine.  The next day, I was doing laundry and I saw that there was a new mark on the door jamb saying Gab, 9/17/09, showing how tall he was on that day. Wasn’t that amazing how those guys started recording the boys’ height on there when we first lived with them and kept doing it? And so, Gab was 8.
