Cela doit lui faire chaud au cœur. Al Gore vient de recevoir le prix Nobel de la paix conjointement décerné au GIEC (Groupe d’Experts Intergouvernemental sur l’Evolution du Climat), un organe de l’ONU, pour sa croisade sur le réchauffement planétaire. Il a vraiment sillonné la planète (pas très bon pour l’environnement, mais bon…) et parlé devant des tonnes de gens dont cet événement où je l’avais entendu en mai pour tirer la sonnette d’alarme.

 

Du côté de l’ego et de la postérité, cela doit faire plaisir de recevoir le même prix que Gandhi et Martin Luther King, pour celui qui a failli être président des Etats-Unis lors des élections catastrophiques de 2000. Sur le plan plus macro de la survie de la planète, il a aussi de quoi être content de son travail. La nouvelle arrive dans une atmosphère où le message est devenu omniprésent. Dans les rues et les transports en commun de San Francisco par exemple, les messages publicitaires sur ce thème sont partout (photo dans la station de Bart la plus proche de chez moi). Il y a évidemment une bonne part de récupération et de « lip service » (on cause fort, mais on ne fait rien), mais quelque chose semble vraiment avoir changé dans l’attitude des Américains. Chez les particuliers, en tout cas ceux que je fréquente, c’est sûr. Pour les nombreuses boîtes qui jouent leur image là-dessus ou qui ont des solutions dans ce domaine, c’est évident et il n’y a qu’à voir comment les « green tech » enflamment la Silicon Valley et les investisseurs depuis quelque temps. En ce qui concerne le gouvernement américain, c’est moins clair même si la Californie, pour sa part, est un état en avance.

 

 

His Nobel Peace Prize must have warmed Al Gore’s heart after his huge efforts to bring people to understand and act about the life-threatening issue of global warming. I got a chance to hear him give one of his many, many presentations based on The Inconvenient Truth last year in San Jose and blogged about it here (in French only). It must be a nice ego boost, and a bit more than a consolation prize, for the man who was nearly president of the United States to join the exclusive club of Nobel Prize winners with Gandhi and Martin Luther King. Eat your heart out, George W.

 

On a larger scale, it is obvious he can be happy with his work. He has really raised awareness about the issue in a way that no other individual has. It is anecdotal, but everywhere you walk in San Francisco right now you are faced with ads that refer to global warming, like the one in this picture taken at my local Bart station. Sure, companies are jumping on the bandwagon and there is a lot of lip service going on. But something in people’s attitude has shifted in a fundamental way. I think many more individuals, well those I am surrounded by at least, are more aware and concerned. Companies, whether they are just using the theme to boost their image or proposing solutions in renewable energies (the hot ticket in the Silicon Valley right now), are seizing the opportunity big time. The big unknown in the equation is the government of this country, even if California as a state is showing some leadership on the issue.
