Veggie Bounty

Since we signed up for our CSA (community-supported agriculture) box in the early Fall, we have been happy campers. At first, the box, which we pick up once a week in Lafayette, was full of tomatoes and zucchinis. We have now moved on to spinach, collards, brocoli and lots of various squashes. I have been on
Eatwell Farm and met farmer Nigel Walker, though not since we joined. The farm organized several events in the Fall, but we were unable to attend.

Some of their fields are organic; others are transitional, meaning that they are in the process of becoming organic. I am not necessarily fanatic about the organic part. What really gets me excited is that this is grown relatively close (Dixon), on a small-scale farm by people who seem to have their heart in the right place. Call me a trendy locavore if you will, but I find this important.

The box also contains 6 nice eggs which make me feel good because the hens are not penned up in tiny spaces, but roam around outside the way both of my grandmothers’ hens did. Short of keeping our own chickens, which quite a few people are starting to do around here, that’s also a solution with which I feel more at peace.

While I could wish for a closer location for the pickup, I am okay with driving to Lafayette because it allows me to shop at Trader Joe’s, a grocery store I like and which is not in my town. The contents of the box keep us stocked for the whole week for vegetables though we have to buy some fruit because the apples, persimmons and pomegranates don’t quite cover our needs.
