Les Kelloucq en voyage

Busy, busy, busy

Still feeling under the water out here. The big event of the past week was Gabriel's birthday. We got to celebrate with several old family friends on the actual date. EJ made him a custom meal including salmon and fried rice. Strangely enough, the party was held at his grandparents' house even though they were out of town. There is another party planned with his buddies this Saturday (a movie and sleepover). He is just a big guy, still very sweet most of the time with very confrontational moments thrown into the mix. He keeps us on our toes.

EJ's new teaching job is still sucking up a lot of his time. Besides two days teaching in the kitchen, there are constant departmental meetings, classes to prepare, coordination with the other teacher and grading of tests. Yes, even cooking students sometimes take written tests. It would be fair to say that he is enjoying the teaching (he is a really a natural). But the bureaucracy? Not so much. In addition, he is getting a fair amount of personal work cooking for people. Big, long weeks and week-ends.

I am still not done with the project I was describing last week and which is getting me up in the middle of the night to reach people in France. Tomorrow was to be the deadline and everything is ready to roll on my side. But just this morning, the scope of the project was expanded. It means more work to be turned around quickly and more pay, of course. I am not complaining about that. But I felt kind of done and mentally had moved on already.

I am looking forward to quiet mornings when I am not trying to feed the boys and get them ready for school while taking EJ to Bart, answering emails and phone calls while eating my English muffin and running around the place. I am also gearing up for another big project that will involve helping a French documentary team here in California later in the fall. In the meanwhile, routine work is getting done at the 11th hour which is not my usual way to do things. It is exhausting and exhilarating at the same time.

Regardless of the craziness, I mean to keep my appointment with myself in my new Tai Chi class. I am concentrating so hard on the movements, it is truly allowing me to forget about the outside world for an hour. After just two classes, I can say I like it. I was overdue for some personal attention and time. It is all women, several of them older and very interesting. So that's also a nice change from my usual male environment.

We got our second CSA food box yesterday from Eatwell Farms. We love to unpack it and get a whiff of the basil. The contents are not a secret since we get a summary the day before the delivery. But it is such a nice feeling to discover our fresh vegetables. Especially for me maybe, because I visited the farm this summer. As a matter of fact, there is an overnight event planned there this week-end for members, but sadly we will miss it. This week-end is all about soccer, Gabriel's birthday party, a Burning Man clean-up get together with our campmates and Much Ado about Nothing with the boys for me. A little Shakespeare in the park, with nice weather predicted, should be nice.
