Pendant des années, j’ai lu professionnellement pour le compte d’un éditeur qui cherchait à acquérir les droits et à traduire des livres écrits en anglais. A ce régime qui tue quelque peu le plaisir de la lecture, je lisais deux livres par semaine, pas toujours des plus intéressants. J’avais arrêté quelque temps avant de partir en Californie et je n’ai pas repris le harnais même si je pense à rappeler mon contact…

 

En attendant, je suis en train de lire deux livres intéressants. Le premier est Seven Ages of Paris: Portrait of a city où j’apprends tout sur le passé violent et sordide de Paris. Pour le petit-déjeuner, je peux ainsi raconter aux garçons comment Henri IV a dû faire le siège de Paris afin de pouvoir devenir roi de France ou comment les bouchers et les teinturiers rejetaient encore il n’y a pas si longtemps tous leurs déchets directement dans la Seine. Le second livre, je l’ai retrouvé par hasard dans ma bibliothèque chez mes parents pendant les vacances. Pensées pour moi-même de l’empereur stoïcien Marc-Aurèle est une lecture étrangement réconfortante. Il y encourage le lecteur a resté fidèle à son « principe directeur » sans se laisser entraîner dans une vaine poursuite de la gloire et de la bonne opinion des hommes. Une lecture apaisante qui aide à se détacher des petits tracas si peu importants dans l’ordre des choses.

 

 

For years, I was a professional reader gobbling up two books a week for a publisher looking for English language books to buy and translate. I stopped sometime before we left for California and have not gotten back into it. I have to say that this regimen kills the pleasure of reading as the books are not always fascinating. Yet I am toying with the idea of contacting the publisher and telling him I am back…

 

In the meanwhile, I am reading two interesting books. One is Seven Ages of Paris: Portrait of a city where I am learning in minute details about the violent and dirty past of Paris. For breakfast, I can regal the boys with stories about Henri IV laying siege to Paris in order to become the next king of France or the way butchers and textile workers would until pretty recently throw all their gunk directly into the Seine. The other book which I just happened upon on my old bookshelves at my parents’ during the vacations is Pensées pour moi-même from Marc-Aurele (simply Thoughts in English apparently), the Roman emperor and philosopher. This was an assigned reading at some point in my schooling, but I am now finding surprising comfort in this book which encourages the reader to be true to his nature and to forsake the vain pursuit of glory and the good opinion of others. A relaxing read which helps put things into perspective.
