Je m’étais promis de continuer à pratiquer l’espagnol de retour à Paris. J’ai enfin pu mettre de côté une soirée pour aller à mon premier « Spanish Meetup » Place de la République dans un bar à tapas avec musique live. Premier constat : les Français ne savent pas parler debout un verre à la main. Il faut obligatoirement manger et donc s’asseoir. Du coup, la conversation se limite un peu à deux ou trois voisins à cause de l’ambiance sonore. Je ne me plains pas, mes voisins étaient sympas et intéressants : une jeune photographe italienne installée à Paris, un émigré cubain de 70 ans et la très active organisatrice de l’événement. Mon espagnol est fonctionnel, mais pour bien faire, il faudrait une approche un peu plus studieuse (réviser les verbes et noter du vocabulaire nouveau qui, autrement, a tendance à s’envoler). Enfin, c’était un premier pas et en plus bien agréable de faire un peu de vélo dans Paris by night. A noter qu’EJ s’est aussi trouvé une réunion Meetup pour pratiquer l’allemand. Si vous cherchez à rencontrer des gens autour d’un intérêt particulier, allez faire un tour sur Meetup. Je n’ai pas d’actions, je constate juste que c’est un outil très efficace malgré son interface en anglais uniquement. Oh oui, quel bonheur depuis le 1^er janvier et l’interdiction de fumer dans les bars et restaurants. On ne pue plus la fumée en rentrant chez soi. Merci aussi pour nos poumons.

 

 

I had promised myself to continue working on my Spanish after I got back to Paris. Last night, I finally set aside an evening to attend my first Parisian “Spanish Meetup” which was being held in a tapas bar with live music on nearby Place de la République. I was immediately reminded that the French cannot just stand around talking while having a drink. One has to sit down and eat. As a result, conversation is somewhat limited to two or three immediate neighbors because of the noise level. I am not complaining as my neighbors were very nice and interesting: a young Italian photographer living in Paris, a 70+-year old Cuban émigré, and the hyperactive organizer of the events. My Spanish is functional. But in order to really improve, I would need a more organized approach, i.e. study verb forms and write down new vocabulary which otherwise comes in one ear and out the other. Anyways, it was a nice first step and, in addition, so nice to be out biking around in night time Paris. EJ has also found himself a German Meetup gathering. I don’t have a stake in Meetup, but for anyone looking for a group meeting around a particular interest, it is a great site to know about. Oh yes, what a delight since January 1 and the ban on smoking in bars and restaurants. How nice to come home no longer smelling of cigarette smoke. Thanks for our lungs too.
