On garde notre maire vert/our green mayor gets to stay
Je reviens du dépouillement dans notre bureau de vote. Depuis le temps que je pensais participer, c'est chose faite. J'ai enfin connu une chaude soirée électorale...sauf que notre bureau penchait à 75% pour le maire sortant, le Vert Jacques Boutault, et que le suspense n'était pas très fort. Pour ceux qui n'auraient jamais pratiqué : quatre citoyens lambda sont assis face à face. On leur remet un paquet contenant 100 bulletins de vote encore sous leurs enveloppes. Un ouvre les enveloppes et tend le bulletin qu'il y trouve à la personne assise à sa diagonale qui annonce le nom de la liste. Les deux autres tiennent un registre en ajoutant des petits bâtonnets par dizaine. Tout cela est réglé comme du papier à musique. La procédure se répète à plusieurs tables, dans plusieurs bureaux de vote, dans tous les arrondissements. A priori donc, nous gardons notre maire d'arrondissement et notre maire de Paris.
I just got back from participating in the "dépouillement", the counting of the votes at the place where I vote. I had been meaning to parcipate for a long time and now I can say I did it. I can't say it was a particularly nerve-racking experience as our current mayor, Jacques Boutault from the Green party, got 75% of the votes at our polling place. No electronic voting machines in France. So counting the votes is a manual and labor intensive affair though enough citizens turn up to make it quick. At the basic level, four people sit across from each other at a table. One is in charge of getting the voting ballot out of the enveloppe and hands it over to the person sitting kitty corner. That person announces the name on the ballot and the two others tally the results on two separate sheets. This procedure is repeated at several tables within a polling place, at all polling places across the city. It is not glamourous, but it is the tedious work of this very well-oiled machine that gives quick results. We should keep not only our Green mayor in the second arrondissement, but also Delanoe as the mayor of Paris.
