Premieres impressions/First impressions
Je suis deja venue a New York plusieurs fois, y compris l'annee derniere avec les enfants. Mais c'est la premiere fois que je vais y passer autant de temps. Nous avons un programme sympa et des moments ouverts a tout : une ballade dans les Hamptons demain, un spectacle (Spring Awakening) vendredi, un diner avec George et Mari samedi (oui, ils sont la aussi pour voir leur fils, c'est d'ailleurs Mari qui m'avait alertee sur le super deal et il se trouve qu'on a reserve exactement les memes vols!).
Arrivee sous une petite pluie et une chaleur etouffante hier, j'ai rejoint ma copine Kristi a son groupe d'ecrivains (elle a publie un roman pour jeunes - My 13th Season - et travaille sur un autre), mais je suis arrivee un peu tard pour voir le groupe en action apres avoir ete coincee dans un train a Penn Station pendant 30 minutes. Nous avons dine tout pres dans un petit bistro que Kristi aime dans ce quartier du West Village ou elle habitait depuis des annees. Elle l'a fui pour Harlem a cause des loyers galopants et de la gentrification a tout va. Son nouvel appartement est plus grand et c'est tant mieux pour heberger sa menagerie (un chien et trois chats pour le moment).
Je vais travailler un peu, j'ai passe des coups de fil toute la matinee. Ce soir, je suis allee a une reunion tres informelle de NextNY, un groupe de jeunes entrepreneurs high-tech et j'ai eu plusieurs conversations interessantes dans un bar en plein air a Union Square. Je veux comprendre pourquoi une start-up high-tech choisie New York sur la Silicon Valley. Union Square a des visages changeants ; en fin d'apres-midi, nous y avons fait notre marche a un Farmer's Market et apres la tombee de la nuit, un groupe y projetait un documentaire contestant la version officielle sur les attaques du 11 septembre sur le World Trade Center. Ce soir, je suis sous le charme de New York et de son energie.
I have been to New York several times, most recently with the boys last summer. But this is the first time I get to stay a whole week. We have a nice program, but lots of free time too: ride to the Hamptons tomorrow, see Spring Awakening on Friday, dinner with George and Mari on Saturday (yes, they are here too visiting their son, Mari is the one who tipped me about the great airfare and it turned out that we booked the exact same flights!).
The weather was damp and humid last night (it is sunny and pleasantly breezy today). I met Kristi at her writers' group straight from the airport (Kristi has published a novel for young readers - My 13th Season - and is working on another one). Unfortunately, a 30-minute delay at Penn Station prevented me from getting there on time to see the group at work. We grabbed dinner at a diner nearby in the West Village. Kristi lived there for years but skyrocketing rents and the rapid gentrification of the neighborhood made her move to Harlem where her bigger apartment is more suitable for her current menagerie (one dog and three cats).
I am going to work some and I have started making calls this morning. This evening, I attended an informal gathering hosted by NextNY, a group of young high-tech entrepreneurs, who were having a drink at an outdoor cafe in Union Square. In a nutshell, I want to find out why a start-up would chose New York over, say, the Silicon Valley. Simultaneously, Union Square was having a farmer's market in the late afternoon and a video showing questioning the official version about the 911 attack on the World Trade Center. Tonight, I am totally in love with New York and its raw energy.
