Quand nos gadgets techno nous lâchent/Technological failings

Je suis arrivée en France il y a bientôt un mois avec un ordinateur portable très mal en point (l’écran et le clavier étaient sur le point de faire sécession) et un téléphone portable complètement en rade. Une de mes premières missions a été d’expédier ces deux outils assez indispensables en réparation. L’ordinateur vient de revenir et le téléphone est en chemin. Alléluia ! Du coup, EJ et moi n’avons plus à organiser les 3x8 sur l’ordinateur dont nous avons tous les deux besoin (ou est-ce une addiction dont nous devrions essayer de nous débarrasser?). EJ me dit que, pendant mon absence, ce n’était pas tant s’occuper des enfants et assurer le quotidien qui était difficile, mais bien remettre l’ordinateur de bureau en état de marche, se battre avec la connexion Internet qui a nécessité plusieurs interventions sur place du fournisseur et en général gérer la technologie omniprésente dans nos vies. D’ailleurs, c’est maintenant à son téléphone portable de partir en cure de revitalisation. Alors, malchance ou lot ordinaire des gagdetphiles ? En tout cas, on ne peut vivre sans, mais vivre avec n’est pas une sinécure.
 
 
When I arrived in France about a month ago, my laptop was not doing well (the screen and the keyboard were trying to part ways) and my cell phone was completely on the fritz. One of my first missions was to send both off to be repaired. The laptop just came back and the cell phone is on its way. Alleliua! EJ and I no longer have to organize shifts on the desktop (we both need the computer a lot or do we? Maybe it is an addiction we should try to kick). EJ was telling me that, while I was not here with them, taking care of the boys and the rest of daily life was not the hardest part at all. The real pain was coaxing our desktop back to life, fighting with the Internet connection which required several visits from our service provider and just manage technological issues in general. As a matter of fact, his own cell phone is about to be sent off to get fixed too. So are we just unlucky or is the common lot of all of us techies? In any case, we can’t live without our gadgets. But living with them can turn into a big pain sometime.
