The swine flu scare hits home

We had our first potential encounter with the disease that is currently terrorizing the world. As a mom, I am finding it difficult to gage the seriousness of the problem. Is the flu season going to be drastically more dangerous than in years past? Should the boys get the shot? What else should we do to protect ourselves apart from religiously washing our hands and coughing in our elbows?

We spent a fair amount of time during the week-end before last hanging out with EJ’s sister. She sat next to Gabriel at the Cal game, telling him about the rules of the games inches from his face to be heard over the noise. We all sat together across tables and on sofas. By Monday, she was feeling under the weather and then it got worse and worse. The definite test on whether she has swine flu has not come yet, but she definitely got a bad case of something nasty. I will spare you the details.

On Thursday morning, Emmanuel had very rosy cheeks and a bit of a temperature. He was coughing some. Of course, we kept him home. His aunt had been worried about having infected the boys and got a prescription of Tamiflu from her doctor for both boys. They have both been taking it.

Emmanuel was already better by Friday, but still stayed home and rested. Not missing a beat, I had him take his first French test during this providential down time. This morning, he is back in school and the scare is over. Knock on wood; it will hopefully be the worse of it for the season. But really, is there very serious cause for alarm or are we all whipping ourselves into a collective state of frenzy unnecessarily? I am still not sure about that.
