Public Transportation Day

The East Bay is usually a territory I cover from the comfort and convenience of the car. Today, I crisscrossed it on Bart and it felt good. At 9 a.m., EJ dropped Emmanuel and I at the Apple Store in Walnut Creek for my three-hour Personal Project class. I was not worried about Emmanuel. An Apple Store is a new kind of Disneyland for kids. Emmanuel, always the avid reader, had brought a book. But the challenge from iPads and iPhones laying everywhere was hard to resist. While I worked, he played.

By noon, we were leaving the store and encountered these Applemaniacs already lining up on the sidewalk for the release of the iPhone 4 scheduled for tomorrow/June 24 as widely announced, including on this blog. Emmanuel and I strolled around on Main Street in direction of the Bart station, stopping for lunch at a Thai restaurant and window shopping. By 2 p.m., we were back in Orinda and headed for our usual hairdresser where we both got a haircut. Emmanuel’s just a trim, mine more radical. All on foot ! I then left Emmanuel at the library to wait for his brother and father while I forged onward to Berkeley where I had set up a last minute interview.

I loved it. I felt like a Parisian again, able to get from place to place on public transportation and my own two legs without constantly jumping in a car. About 44 miles I did not drive, 2 gallons of gas I did not burn…I also loved this whole day with my boy, watching him be, chatting and hanging out with him.
